    Facial Serums Vs. Facial Moisturizers..... What is the Difference? Do you need both?

    What is the difference between “facial serums” and “facial moisturizers”?  I get asked that question a lot.  People are perplexed and confused about which one to use and whether they should be using both.  The more knowledgeable and educated you are on this skin   care terminology, the more you can make better choices when you purchase!


    Facial moisturizers and creams have been the most prevalent method of skin care for many decades.  Your grandmother probably even had her own favorite cream or moisturizer as part of her daily skin care routine.  Today, however, dermatologists and cosmetologists recommend the use of cutting edge concentrates known as serums, along with a daily moisturizer to address specific skin care concerns such as dark spots, fine lines, wrinkles, and dry skin. Serums penetrate deep into the dermis where they can stimulate collagen production, a protein that our bodies produce less of as we age.  Creams and lotions are only topical and treat the visible outer layer of skin for an instant beauty boost.

    So…should you use a serum, or moisturizer, or both?  The answer is YES to all of the above.  Here’s why…

    A serum and moisturizing cream differ in many ways.  One of the main contrasts is in their molecular structure.  A serum has a small enough molecular structure to penetrate the skin easily, whereas moisturizers and lotions have a larger molecule which lay on top of the skin, keeping it moisturized.  Serums are highly concentrated and extremely potent. They contain around 10-15 times more active anti-aging ingredients than skin care creams.  A moisturizing cream or lotion contains emollients to hydrate the skin and forms a barrier on your skin that keeps oils from escaping and harmful outside elements from causing dryness or irritation. 


    A serum and moisturizer differ not only in their consistency and feel on the skin, but also in terms of the ingredients they contain.   A serum is generally a water-based liquid or gel that feels lightweight on the skin and is able to penetrate the skin more easily.  It is fast absorbing, and has a high concentration of active ingredients like antioxidants, vitamins, skin brighteners, peptides, hydrators and exfoliators.   A lotion or cream, on the other hand, contains moisturizing ingredients that are meant to hydrate and protect the skin, thus treating only the top layer…the epidermis.


    A serum’s ability to penetrate into the dermis, because of its smaller molecular structure, means the vitamins and minerals it delivers get deeper into the skin layers. It is more highly concentrated and useful in addressing specific skin problems that cannot always be treated topically. It is actually treating your skin from the inside out!  Serums are also able to deliver the anti-aging, active ingredients deeper into your skin to affect real change in healing damaged cells and build up the skin matrix.  The skin matrix is responsible for structural integrity, mechanical resilience, stability and many other properties of the skin. The degradation of the skin matrix plays an important role in the development of wrinkles and other signs of aging.  Using a serum, will smooth out lines and deeper wrinkles the way a lotion or cream cannot.

    There are also many good reasons to use a facial moisturizer.  A moisturizer cream or lotion is necessary to hydrate your skin and provides protection from the outside elements and environment. Keeping skin hydrated is an important step toward keeping it healthy.  Facial moisturizers enhance the functioning of the stratum corneum, the uppermost layer of skin.  This layer is made up of fat, oil, and skin cells that help keep moisture in the skin.  Applying a moisturizer to your face can increase the moisture level of the stratum corneum, prevent skin from drying out, and if the moisturizer contains a sunscreen, then you will have protection against sun damage also.  Moisturizers treat the skin from the outside.

     How to use a Serum and Moisturizer together:

    Remember…a facial serum is a “treatment” rather than a cosmetic.  A little bit goes a long way, and packaging is typically very small.  Depending on the function of the serum and its active ingredients, you will apply it either morning or night.  To get the most out of your serum, wash your face using a mild exfoliant first.  Apply toner, (if you use a toner) and then apply serum directly onto skin around the entire face and neck area, avoiding the eyes and lips. Most importantly you don't need a lot of product - a few drops or a pea size amount of the product is enough.  More is not better when it comes to serums.  Wait a few minutes to allow the serum to absorb into your skin completely.  Follow up with a rich, hydrating moisturizer.  Applying a moisturizer will help lock in those nutrients delivered by your serum of choice.  To get the best results, use a serum every day.  



    Don’t rely on facial moisturizers alone!  Invest in a serum to give your skin a boost and nourish it with the extra antioxidants and vitamins it needs to build a strong skin matrix.  It will improve the look and firmness of your skin.  You also need hydration and protection for your outer layer, stratum corneum.   So moisturize daily, too.   To really take care of your skin, especially as you get older, both a serum and a moisturizing cream or lotion will be your Best Friend!

    If you are like me, I get hungry in between meals at work and always need something to snack on. It is always easy to grab the chips or cookies because they are so convenient, but not easy on your waistline, or even your skin! Good skin comes from good eating habits, as well as a good skin care regimen. Here are some suggestions for easy office snacks to energize you as well as feed your body and the skin you need to nourish!

    1. Veggie Sticks: These are a great go-to snack. Pick seasonal, organic and local veggies and slice them up for grabbing.
    2. Hummus: You can dip those veggies in the hummus, as well as crackers for a healthier choice.
    3. Trail Mix: Make your own favorite trail mix of raw almonds, cashews, walnuts, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, coconut flakes, dried fruit and whatever else you want to add to satisfy your taste buds. Maybe a little dark chocolate, too.
    4. Dates: This wonderful fruit is full of fiber and nutrients, and will satisfy your sweet tooth!
    5. Fresh Fruit: This is a given. Fruit is so easy to take along and convenient. Grapes, bananas, apples, pears and blueberries are easily carried around in your purse or bag, and they are not messy.
    6. Popcorn: Popcorn is fun and delicious. Add nuts to get more fiber and protein.
    7. Almond Butter: Pair this with all your fruits and crackers for a very appetizing snack.
    8. Green Tea: I can’t say enough of this antioxidant. It is great for your body, your skin, and giving you a little pep mid-morning or mid-afternoon. Drink it hot or cold, with a little lemon.
    9. Ginger Ale: Don’t keep making trips to the soda machine when you want a little pick-me-up or you are craving the “fizz”. You can drink ginger ale (homemade if you can) or you can add lemons, limes, oranges, cucumbers, etc. to some seltzer water for a refreshing, healthy drink.
    10. Sandwich Wraps: Make yourself a sandwich with your all-time favorite ingredients (spinach, carrots, bell peppers, chickpeas, or whatever on a whole-grain tortilla.
    11. Avocados: Slice one open with some salt and pepper and you are good to go…or add it in with your sandwich and veggie sticks.
    12. Plain Yogurt: Always choose plain yogurt and add in your own fresh ingredients to cut down on added sugar.
    13. Pretzels and Whole Grain Crackers: Sometimes I just want to crunch! Get some of these so you won’t reach for the chips and other unnecessary carbs.
    14. Peanut or Almond Butter Balls: These are one my absolute favorite snacks of ALL time! Mix equal parts peanut butter, oatmeal, honey and protein powder (if desired) for a very filling and satiating snack. I sometimes add some dark chocolate morsels or coconut flakes with flax seeds for even more fiber. Make them as big or small as you like!
    15. Green Smoothie: Get out that blender and add some spinach, kale, squash, blueberries, grapes, pineapple, bananas, and anything else you might want to add to your healthy menu for the day! Add some juice, water or almond milk, and blend. This is one of the most potent, antioxidant drinks around. So much fiber and delicious antioxidants. Your body and your skin will love you for it!

      We all desire a healthy, bright complexion. If you are fortunate enough to have clear skin…then it is one less thing you have to feel insecure about. If your complexion is dull, it is harder to feel good about yourself…HOWEVER…there is good news! A brighter complexion IS attainable. Take a look at your diet, your lifestyle, and your daily skin care regimen and find out what could be causing your dull skin.

        EAT THE RIGHT FOODS - you are what you eat. We all use to hear this when we were younger. Ah… but words of wisdom are wasted on the young. At least that was in my case. However, this saying is really true. You can’t put bad gas in your car and expect it to run properly. In the same sense, you cannot continue bad eating habits and expect your skin AND your body to respond in a positive manner. What you put into your body will definitely have an effect on your health and your appearance.

          MINIMIZE ALCOHOL – While alcohol in moderation can be somewhat healthy for your body, it can also dehydrate and dull your skin. When consumed on a regular basis, alcohol can increase the blood flow to the skin’s surface which results in a flushed appearance that over time can be ­­permanent. Try to keep alcohol intake to a minimum.

            EXFOLIATE YOUR SKIN – No matter how hard you try, dead skin cannot be moisturized. Dead skin is dead, dry and flaky. It does not go away until you have sloughed it off. Exfoliating your skin is a key to a brighter complexion. Several ways to exfoliate are:

                      . Daily using a washcloth for gentle exfoliation

                      . Using an exfoliation treatment product

                      . Microdermabrasion or a skin care brush for deeper exfoliation

                     Daily exfoliation consistently sloughs off the dead skin cells and leads to a brighter complexion

                        DRINK MORE WATER:   Most of us do not drink enough water every day.  Water is essential for our body to function.  Our body is made up of more than 60% water.  Since we are constantly losing water every day through urine, bowel movements, perspiration and breathing...we need to replenish it.

                        EXERCISE: Get moving!  Movement is critical to your life span.  Research shows that daily exercising boosts your immune system bringing tremendous benefits to your health, including weight loss, lowering risk of diseases, increasing bone density. Exercising improves your mental outlook, preventing anxiety and depression. Choose to walk instead of ride…climb the stairs instead of taking the elevator…take up a sport or join an exercise class.

                        GET ENOUGH SLEEP: Lack of sleep causes premature aging in your body and also shows up on your face. When you don’t get enough rest, you compensate by eating more food (leading to weight gain) and usually it will be junk food. When you get enough rest, you won’t be grabbing unhealthy food choices to stay awake.

                        EAT A WIDE VARIETY OF VEGETABLES AND FRUITS: Pick bright colored fruits and vegetables. They are high in antioxidants, which remove free radicals in our body that cause damage to our cells. White (banana, mushroom) Yellow (pineapples, mango) Orange (oranges, papayas) Red (apples, strawberries, tomatoes, watermelon) Green (guava, avocados, cucumber, lettuce, celery) Purple/blue (blackberries, eggplant, prunes).

                        CUT DOWN ON PROCESSED FOOD: Processed food is anything that is not in its natural and raw form. Most food at the grocery store is processed. Processed foods contain a high amount of salt, which leads to high blood pressure and heart disease. Look for salt/sugar as the first ingredient in a product and stay away from them. Go for natural foods as much as possible.

                        MEDITATE: Being still and quiet can be beneficial to your body by calming your spirit and soul, lowering your blood pressure, and giving you a positive outlook on life. Respect your “Me” time. You will become more productive and focused on the things that are important to you.

                        BUY SOME HAPPINESS: We all have basic psychological needs to love, feel loved, feel secure, be connected to others and be good at what we accomplish. Money doesn’t automatically fill these requirements, but it can help. Look for ways to spend your money on the things worthwhile that make you happy. Take a trip to see your family and keep in touch, buy gifts for others or for a project for yourself to help you function and work more efficiently, (camera for picture taking for special events to make a scrapbook for memories), purchase garden tools for a relaxing experience in getting back to nature, take a vacation to somewhere that will put your life into perspective and expand your horizons, spend money to promote better health and vitality, and lastly support causes that are important to you.

                      2. My skin is softer

                        I love this product! I use it under my moisturizer and makeup during the day and under my Anti-Wrinkle deep wrinkle serum at night. It has definitely helped my 56 year old skin - my friends have noticed the difference! It does work best if you apply it to clean skin first, wait until it absorbs and then add moisturwizer. It does make your skin seem tight when you apply it but that's where using moisturizer comes in. The combination of the two really helps me keep my skin looking great. The smell is Devine! I am a beauty product junkie (in all price categories) and for the money this is a great product. I've tried other hyaluronic acid/vitamin c serums and have found this one to be excellent.
